Short Documentary School of Life 2019-2020, part 1
This video is about ten young people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, most of whom grew up in the disadvantaged neighbourhood of Schilderswijk in The Hague, they spend six months developing themselves in the School of Life project.
The project was initiated by Stagehuis Schilderswijk and is an experimental project as part of the Dutch government’s social conscription (Maatschappelijke Diensttijd) initiative.
The participants are challenged to think about who they are, to develop their talents and to formulate goals for life. The results were: a five-a-side football competition, a theatre performance and the girls’ group ‘Girlz’.
Visits to Westerbork concentration camp and the Stasi prison in Berlin had a big impact on the participants. One of their most impressive experiences was stepping out of their comfort zone.
